Description

Lady Suzanne is a 1985 Hans Christian 33T, designed by Harwood Ives and built in Taiwan. She is a full-keeled, heavy-displacement cutter-rigged blue-water cruiser. These boats are known for their legendary robust construction, significant teak wood usage, and luxurious interior. They are a popular choice for long-distance cruising, secure ocean passage-making and a comfortable liveaboard option.

Key Characteristics and Description:

  • Design & Performance: Known as a "heavy" boat with a high displacement-to-length ratio, ensuring a comfortable motion at sea. It features a full keel with a keel-mounted rudder, a double-ender stern, and a moderate-to-large bowsprit.
  • Construction: Very thick hand-laid, solid fiberglass construction with high, thick bulwarks that offer security, along with substantial stainless steel double lifelines.
  • Rigging: The cutter rig (33T), is designed for stability and adaptability to high winds, including a main, staysail, and a jib on the furlers.
  • Interior & Layout: Known for surprisingly large interiors for a 33-footer. It features high-quality teak/mahogany, a forward Pullman berth, a private aft quarter berth, a spacious U-shaped salon, and roomy galley.
  • Cockpit: Designed as a "small" cockpit to improve safety and minimize water intake in heavy seas, and still comfortable for local cruising.

Layout

The Hans Christian 33T (Traditional) is a heavy-displacement, full-keel canoe-stern sailboat known for extensive teak joinery, featuring a classic, rugged layout designed for bluewater cruising. It features a large, secure U-shaped galley aft, a U-shaped dinette in the salon, a forward-facing navigation station, and a private, comfortable aft berth.

Below Deck Layout (Interior)

  • Galley: Located to port at the companionway. It is large and functional, featuring a double stainless sink, gimballed propane stove with oven, and top/bottom loading icebox.
  • Salon: Features a large U-shaped dining area to port (often with a table that seats six) and a settee/salon berth to starboard.
  • Navigation Station: Positioned to starboard, featuring an opening chart table and electrical panels.
  • Master Stateroom/Berth: Located aft on the starboard side, providing a private cabin area (rather than a simple quarter berth), often with a hanging locker.
  • Forward Head & V-Berth: The head is located in the bow, providing generous space, usually with a shower, allowing for better storage than traditional layouts.
  • Interior Finish: Abundant use of high-quality, rich Burmese teakwood throughout, along with mahogany accents.
