Description
Macondo has been lovingly owned and sailed by a an adventurous family of four since 2018 and was previously owned by a sailing couple since 1982. A regular at Catalina, her spacious cockpit and ergonomic interior combine classic touches with liveable functionality and seaworthiness. She’s island ready and would make a fine cruiser in local waters or to foreign ports–other Pearson 424s have circumnavigated.
The ketch rig is easy to learn and a ton of fun to sail, plus makes shorthanding a breeze thanks to smaller individual sails. Low hour Westerbeke is a workhorse and has been serviced regularly. Robust ram-style autopilot is great for long passages or hand steer with the teak wheel at the helm. Custom canvas includes dodger, removable cockpit cover, sheet bags, and helm and winch covers. Dickinson stove/oven and large sink result in extremely functional galley. The ample closet space and guest vanity with sink in the V-berth stateroom afford comfort and privacy to guests while large aft stateroom is great for overnight or liveaboard use. Settees convert to single bunks for crew. Second companionway is convenient and opens the salon to sun and fresh air on beautiful Southern California days.
Recent upgrades include Xantrax battery charger / inverter for AGM battery bank (2022), rebuilt alternator converted to internal regulation (2022), new aluminum propane tanks and propane pigtail (2022), new battery isolator (2021), Selden roller furler & custom jib with Sunbrella cover from UK Sails (2020), newer UK Sails mainsail and crisp mizzen, 25kg Rocna + 150 ft. chain to 100 ft rode (2020), rebuilt Simpson-Lawrence windlass with oversize motor and case (2021), MPPT charger that’s installed and plug-in ready for solar panels if new owner chooses (2020), Esper-style diesel heater vented throughout boat and great for chilly nights at anchor or in the slip (2020), Airhead Composting head (zero marine smell; holding tank still in place if new owner wishes to convert back), standing rigging continuously upgraded and replaced throughout ownership, upgraded running rigging.
Boat is currently in coveted slip on great dock in Marina del Rey, which may be transferable subject to dockmaster’s approval.
