Description
The Kelpie II was commissioned in 1924 by the Callahan family of Lake Muskoka, Ontario. They asked the Morris Boat Works company of Hamilton, Ontario to build a custom launch suitable for cruises in Ontario's cottage country. Morris Boat Works was famous as a speed boat builder, building boats for both the police and the rum runners of the 1920's! This classic has a real slice of history to add to the old-time luxury of wooden boat cruising. After decades of enjoyment the original family stored the Kelpie II in a shed where it was neglected for many years. The second owner tracked it down and purchased it in 1984. The Kelpie II required extensive restoration – it had a complete new bottom build and the upper timbers were lovingly reworked to maintain as much of the original craftsmanship as possible. Hardware was restored where possible or was manufactured or cast to resemble the original. The original engine had been replaced in 1932 with the current and far more reliable Kermath which was also totally rebuilt in 1984. The canvas bimini was replaced in 1986. The Kelpie II has been regularly maintained and operated since the restoration. For almost 100 years the Kelpie II has been enjoyed for leisurely Muskoka cruises by the families that have owned and loved her.
The Kelpie II comes with burgundy leather helm and rear seat upholstery, 4 wicker chairs with matching leather cushions, a carpet for the cockpit, rope weave fenders, a custom-made mahogany boat hook and 2 custom mahogany paddles, all of which are in excellent condition.
