The Tartan 34C (for “Classic”) was initially marketed as the Tartan 34 and is an American built sailboat that was designed by the renowned Olin Stephens of Sparkman and Stephens fame. The design (Number 1904) was completed in 1967 and went into production in 1968. 

A success from the beginning, in the Southern Ocean Racing Circuit’s 1968 race, a T34C won her class. Her design has gone on to win numerous offshore races, including the Port Huron-Mackinac and the Marblehead-Halifax races, among many others. At least one circumnavigation and many Atlantic and Pacific passages are part of the heritage.

During its ten-year production run, 525 boats had been launched, making it one of Tartan Marine’s best-selling models ever. Later, an unrelated S&S design was introduced in 1984 and marketed as the Tartan 34 MKII; an additional 110 of these boats were built. Most of these are still accounted for and there is a very strong 34C Owner’s Association, a testament to the quality of these beautiful classics. A common expression of “Let Olin steer” is used amongst many owners, the balance is so good. One owner comments that the boat steers better to windward without him on board.

ACCOMMODATIONS

Master stateroom:  Forward in the master stateroom is access to the anchor locker, followed by the spacious 77” x 30” x 84” berth.  There are fiddled shelves running along the hull sides above the bunk and two drawers and two louvered lockers beneath it. The v-berth can also be configured as two single berths with a changing seat between them. There is storage beneath the changing seat, or you can put the upper filler in to convert it to a single bunk. Lightning and ventilation are provided by two fixed port lights, two LED reading lamps, an overhead hatch and a Caframo 12v fan. Headroom in this stateroom is 6’. There is access to the head on port from this space, with the door to the head also serving as the cabin door. Just aft in the corridor is a hanging locker and three drawers, with a fiddled shelf above it. 

Head:  Entering the head from the hallway, the toilet is directly ahead and has a locker behind it and shelf storage above with louvered doors above. To the right of the toilet is a fiddled countertop, with a round sink with locker space below. Lighting and ventilation are provided by one opening port, a solar vent, a dorade vent and a Hella fan.  Headroom is 6’ in this space. 

Saloon:  On starboard, the settee is 5’3” and has footwell space making a great 6’6” long sea berth. The footwell also provides a convenient storage space for the bedding. The padded backrest can be moved down to form a leeboard while at sea. There is tank storage beneath this berth. On port is a 6’4” long L-shaped settee.  With the padded back rests removed, it makes a 36” wide berth or, with the insert filler in place the berth becomes a full 54” wide double.  When the backrests are in place there is ample storage behind them to store bedding. The L portion of the settee houses the engine, allowing great access to the entire engine area.

Both sides have double shelf lockers the length of the settees with sliding panel doors. The bulkhead mounted table stores conveniently out of the way to keep the space open but can easily be lowered to provide comfortable dining for four. 

Lighting and ventilation are provided by five fixed lights, one overhead hatch, three overhead lights, two brass reading lights and a Caframo fan. Headroom in the saloon is 6’1”.

Galley:  Headroom in the galley is 6’.  The L-shaped galley is located at the base of the companionway on starboard.  There is a 2-burner Origo alcohol stove along the hull side. Beneath the stove is a wide drawer and a double door locker space below the drawer. Aft of that is a large top-loading storage bin.  Above and behind both along the hull side is shelving with sliding doors, plate and cup organizers and a fiddled shelf. Along the aft end of the galley is a single sink and water mixer, with another locker beneath the sink.  Along the aft bulkhead and behind the dry bin is the insulated icebox, with 12v. refrigeration and a freezer bin. This extends beneath the cockpit seating and can be conveniently accessed from the cockpit, so that while underway you can easily grab a cold one. 

Quarter Berth:  The quarter berth is 6’5” x 29” and has storage beneath it. There is a fiddled shelf that runs the length of the hull side. The forward end has a large counter which can flip up to serve double duty as a chart table or for additional counter space. The electrical panels are located here and have two drawers beneath them at the forward end of the bed. Lighting and ventilation are provided by one reading light and a Caframo fan.
