I was born and raised on the South East Coast of North Carolina in the Cape Fear Region. My love for the water and boating came at a young age as I spent most of my spare time boating and fishing the Cape Fear Area Waters including the Bald Head Island Area. I attended Cape Fear and Wake Tech College with studies in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Network engineering. My work took me to Colorado Springs, CO in 1998 to work for Digital Equipment Corp/Compaq/Hewlett Packard which lasted 8 1/2 years. While in Colorado Springs I attended Victorian Sailing School in Denver, CO and obtained several sailing certifications including bareboat chartering as well as Navigation and Weather for Mariners.
After my two daughters graduated from Air force Academy High School I moved back to North Carolina in 2006 and currently live in The Tides community on the ICW between NC channel markers 149 and 150. I continue to fish inshore and offshore and sail my 27′ Compac in the local inland waters as well as up and down the coast line as time permits.
Since returning to NC I’ve also obtained my USCG 50 Ton Masters license with my towing endorsement. I’ve recently transported a 43′ Mikelson from Kenosha, WI back to Carolina Beach, NC which was a great experience. I look forward to serving you and earning your trust and hope to build some life long relationships with my clients.

Bill Nelson has over 35 years of experience in the marine industry and has most recently managed his own marine consultants company which provides consultants in the areas of yacht brokerage, new construction and marine surveyors. He is joining Curtis Stokes & Associates because of the opportunity to reach a broader client base where he can apply his expertise in all facets of brokerage, management and cruising. “Bill has not only managed the buying, selling and service of a wide range of yachts but he has also worked on yachts from 194’ to 65’ as a project manager and captain. This type of firsthand experience is very valuable to our clients,” says Curtis Stokes, President of Curtis Stokes & Associates.
Bill was introduced to boating at the age of 16 when he started club racing at Mentor Harbor Yachting Club, located just outside of Cleveland, OH. Soon after attending Bowling Green University in OH, Bill moved to Ft. Lauderdale to pursue a career in the yachting industry by starting as a deckhand. Since that time Bill has compiled a significant track record in all facets of the marine industry. In addition to owning and operating his own full-service brokerage, charter and management company, Bill holds a USCG 1600 ton license and has extensive experience in vessel design, construction and repair including having managed the refit of a 194’ Amels Motor Yacht. “I believe my success is due not only to my strong technical knowledge of yachts but also my attention to detail and superior customer service skills. The Curtis Stokes & Associates team is a great match for my own passion and skill sets,” shares Nelson.
Greg Merritt was born and raised in Meridian, MS. He was drawn to the water at an early age and enjoyed all water sports. Thanks to his parent’s lakeside summer home, Greg excelled at waterskiing, fishing and became an avid sailor. He honed in on his sailing and boating skills throughout the lakes in both Mississippi and Alabama.
After graduating from Ole Miss with a Bachelor of Science Degree in General Business, he decided to join the family liquor and wine brokerage business which included covering the states of Mississippi and Alabama. While working with all the liquor stores and military bases throughout the south, Greg perfected his customer service skills with a distinct “southern charm”.
It was his love for the water that brought him to Florida where he continued in the liquor and wine trade with Southern Wine and Spirits through their restaurant division. In 1985 Greg officially joined the Davis Island Yacht Club of Tampa. He has participated in many offshore regattas including a trip from Clearwater to Key West, and a historic sail to Cuba. Greg received his PADI certification in 1987 and still enjoys diving when possible. Other hobbies include his membership with the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, and the 1st Regiment-“Rough Riders Calvary” of Tampa Bay.
It was the combination of his love of the water and boating that lead to his current career as a Yacht Broker.
“This allows me to use my years of customer service from a competitive sales background in tandem with my love for boating. Coming on board with Curtis Stokes and Associates has allowed me to continue honest customer service, while helping my customers find that perfect boat.”
Jane Burnett is located on the west coast of Florida and has lived in the area since 1971 owning several sail and power boats. An avid sailor and racer, Jane participated in the Windjammer Race Series, Kalua Cup and Bikini Cup Series for women winning many awards. During her 12 years in the yacht charter industry, Jane was fortunate enough to sail in the BVI, St. Martin, St. Barts, St. Lucia to Grenada, Australia and Florida on monohulls and catamarans. At the turn of the century, Jane and her husband bought a Beneteau sailboat and cruised around the Caribbean and back to Florida.
Upon graduation from Mercer University with a degree in Psychology, she realized that her chosen career path was not going to allow her to pursue her dreams. When Jane was offered a position with the world’s largest yacht charter company, she quickly accepted and began a successful career in yacht sales selling new yachts into the Caribbean. After cruising in the Caribbean, Jane assisted her husband with the successful startup of a Land Surveying firm providing professional services within the state of Florida. Anxious to return to yacht sales, Jane assisted with the marketing and sale of the firm. Prior to joining Curtis Stokes and Associates, Jane spent 7 years selling brokerage yachts with a large Florida based yacht brokerage firm.
Jane approaches yacht sales from a woman’s perspective. She believes that oftentimes women feel left out of yacht ownership decisions. By engaging both husband and wife in the process the outcome is more likely to be positive. During her career in yacht sales, Jane has assisted many couples to successfully buy and sell their yachts. As the adage states, “The happiest day in a boat owner’s life is the day he buys and sells his yacht!”. Jane believes she is in the “happiness business” and works diligently with her clients to insure every sale results in a happy experience for all involved.
When Jane is not selling yachts, she enjoys spending time with her family, boating, diving/snorkeling, riding motorcycles and hot rods!
